| Since we're ESL teachers and have chosen a life away from our families, I think it can be hard to understand the Polish people's connection with theirs. I think it's something nice and wish families in the US were so close. |

And often, they aren't. The recent-ish protests by some students about the lack of jobs after graduation - it's entirely their own fault. I got one CV a while ago that was hilariously funny - the girl was on her third Masters degree, she had no work experience and she was 27 already. Utterly, totally unemployable.
The whole "weekends are for family, holidays are for travelling" mentality among many young Poles is the exact reason why most of them are struggling to find jobs afterwards. I've seen a first hand example of where someone blew off a great opportunity (in a very, very difficult field to find employment) just to go on some pointless trip with her friends. |

that, and the "oh I'll just get a note from my doctor" mentality. i swear, sometimes it seems like Poles think that the money they get from their socialist systems grows on trees. |

| It does grow on trees...it's called the EU, from which Poland is a net beneficiary to the tune of 6-7 billion quid per annum. |

but the reality of this is that most Poles will flat out deny that they're being given handouts. a lot of poles feel as though they're putting in more than they're receiving and that in the end, the EU is giving them/will give them the shaft. i tend to chalk this up as just another example of how Poles always think they're getting the shaft because Poland always gets hosed kinda thing. |

I like the Poles holiday mentality. Holidays are for getting as far away from your hometown and normal life as possible.
They'll hitchhike to Morocco with 20zl in their pockets or take out a loan for 2 thousand zl and spend 35 hours one way on a crowded coach to spend a week in Turkey.
They all basically vanish for the months of July and or August. My old school would have the office locked during summer and hand out keys to the few teachers that still had lessons as they couldn't find anyone to staff the secretariat during the summer holidays.  |

haha. they will.
i knew a woman that used to drive to Greece from Wroclaw with her entire family packed into a small car. in July.
they can be quite adventurous. |

I agree, Poles' attitudes to vacations are refreshing.
Long, non-working vacations, delaying leaving the nest as long as possible, being mollycoddled even when you're 30. They're the 'forever young' culture.

You see less of this in Warsaw. I've kept pretty busy over the summers here teaching ambitious, business-oriented people privately. |

It has been interesting to read all your comments on Polish mentality, attitudes towards work etc.
Everyone is entitled to have an opinion. I think that if you want to have good lifestyle you have to work hard to get it.
I like Poles' approach to holidays, they just take off and enjoy thier holidays, but I think that people in Poland get more days off than people in any other country. All those long weekends due to religous holidays etc.
I think that it is good that Polish people value their families and family time. In America, people put too much emphasis on work and less on having fun and spending time with thier families. I don't want to judge which approach is better. I think the whole world is getting crazy in general, but that's just my personal opinion.
As far as Polish people being materialistic, I think they are more materialistic than Canadians. We don't really give a crap if we are wearing LV or gap. At least I don't .
There are things that i love about Poland and there are things that I love about Canada or America, but there is no place that's perfect.
Poles bitch about Poland, Canadians Americans bitch about America;) |
