Has anyone here worked, or is working now, in Portugal? I arrived a week ago and am looking for teaching work, but there doesn't seem to be much around. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm qualified and experienced, but have never worked here before.

Also, does anyone know what the going hourly rate is in Portugal; for both language schools and privates?

Thanks.

Hi Richard. I think it's probably better to use the open forum than pm's about this.

I'm in Lisbon now and it is difficult to find work. I've sent out cv's and visited a lot of schools. One school says they're definitely interested when they get their next privates/company classes in. I've had some interest in teaching privately.

Make sure you bring enough money for the first few months.

If anyone is interested, after a month here, and after approaching many schools, I'm beginning to become almost too busy. Although it's a little tight, there is some work here mid season.

Great to hear things have panned out for you there Mark. What would be the best time to be there for mid season work?

The best time in the mid season is after Christmas when some teachers don't show up after the holidays. It wont' be long before language schools here start to look for new teachers for September. Some are already advertising.

Are you thinking of coming to Portugal?

Hi Mark,
I was hoping to teach English in Portugal. I'd be looking at coming there early January, I was wondering what suggestions you'd have for me. Thanks for all the help.

Hi.If you dont mind working in smaller towns rather than Lisbon I would recommend Linguacultura based in Santarem. They have several schools in the Ribatejo region. I worked there about 10 years ago and found their pay and conditions pretty good.

Hi,

If anyone is still reading this thread that knows, has the economic situation of Portugal had an effect on the English teaching game?

I am looking at the possibility of heading to Portugal (Lisbon or Porto) in September and would appreciate any informed words...

thanks

I've left Portugal now, but I've heard from friends still teaching there that the situation is difficult for EFL teachers. Many are leaving, and wages are not keeping up with inflation.

It's very unusual to find teaching jobs in Europe from abroad. If you're in Portugal, your best bet is probably to go around to schools with CV (and your obligatory passport from an EU member country) in hand.

It's also a tough time of year to find anything much in the region - most contracts are Sept/Oct through June.

Do you speak Portuguese?

Who, exactly, are you asking - and why?
