A horrific attack and killing of an unarmed person, a teacher, who was simply trying to increase language skills and cross-cultural awareness.

Hi Murphy 2011,

More terrible news. I was just about to post a similar link, only from the Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/mar/18/us-teacher-shot-dead-yemen

I am usually not one to feel edgy about traveling to rougher areas, but is it time to say that Yemen is now a "no go" kind of place? Are there still teachers working there? How about Syria? Egypt? For the relatively low pay, why would anyone want to take the risk?

Malakina had a similar story posted only a few weeks ago.

Regarding this incident, neither story mentions the institute where the teacher taught. To my knowledge the Modern American Language Institute (MALI) is the only private institute working out of Taiz. Amideast has/had projects in Abyan and Hadaramout in the past, and I believe the British Council works exclusively in Sanaa. Does anyone have any better details surrounding these events?

Sure that could be the case, but Al Qaeda claims he was "one of the biggest missionaries in Yemen" trust Al Qaeda or not we all know there's plenty of EFL teachers doing and teaching inappropriate things. As much as i'd like to believe that he was just an innocent FT, I doubt Al Qaeda was cruising around on a motorbike with some guns and happened upon a white guy that they decided to blast. Fact is, they were probably following him for awhile. I'm not saying he was a missionary or that he did anything wrong, i'm just saying there's no way this was a spontaneous act.
