Yet another British/American difference:

In "Merca", "dame" would be "slangy" - "AMERICAN INFORMAL OLD-FASHIONED a woman. It is sometimes used in a humorous way, but many women find it offensive."

I always wondered if US servicemen didn't bring home the 'dame' from the Netherlands (and possibly Germany) after WWII. All of our staff meetings begin with 'Dames und Herren'....I still occasionally get a smile out of it.

Probably from German. That's where the Russians got 'Дамы и господа!', I think...

Yup, both Great Dames and Great Danes come fro Germany .
