Neither, if you are serious about reading on it for extended periods of time, you want an e-ink screen not a back lit screen.

Am I the only person in the world who doesn't get eye strain from LCDs?

If you intend to do things other than read, I'd be inclined to go for the Nook - whack Cyanogenmod CM7 on there and you have a full-featured tablet PC.

One take on LCD vs e-ink screen question--the author seems to share your opinion, Mr. Monkey.

I have a (now discontinued) Nook WiFi. Which has a depressingly low battery life (I hear the Nook Touch is a lot better in that regard), and can't handle text wrapping for PDFs (I convert all PDFs to epubs in Calibre). But I agree with some previous comments. If I'm going to read books electronically, it won't be on a backlit screen. (I actually prefer paper books, but that's no good for extended periods of time abroad.) I own a Galaxy Tab to do the tablet stuff, and a Nook WiFi solely to read books on.

The Kindle Fire is a watered down version of the ipad. I would rather have an ipad...however you can barely get a refurbished ipad2 for $350??

Galaxy Tab > iPad.

Though I hear that some of the best tablets out there are Chinese exclusives. Not knockoffs; real originals.

I am wondering that same thing.
I am going to China in Audust, and I want a reader. Friends tell me that both the Nook and Kindle have problems. I just think I will continue to use my ipod. It is small, but very clear. Problem is the battery life is very short.

No system is perfect.

As an e-reader, an iPod would simply be a stupid choice, particularly given the (unjustifiable) abundance of PDFs in the wild. You have no idea of the frustration that will ensue when you try to convert the fucker to something legible on an iPod screen, or when the PDF viewer you install kills your battery in even less time than you thought possible.

PDF is a bad technology for the post-PC world. It's just not a relevant standard unless your primary intent is limiting how your readers use the file.

A Kindle battery lasts a month or so (with WiFi on). If you just want a reader and are prepared to put up with badly-formatted PDFs and convert the rest of your files using Calibre, you can't really go wrong.

If you want to be charging your reader every night (I do it with my phone and it's not that big a hassle), then you should probably go with something else.

It's all about control - how much are you prepared to take?

Amazon, B&N, Google and some others provide
FREE software that works on both my laptop
and smartphone. I do not need another toy
to tote around.
