I would have serious apprehensions about living near a volcano. |

You obviously have never been close to Popo nor have you seen the people that live close to him. Most of them could not afford to move even if they wanted too. There are a lot of very poor people living close to the mightly Popo.
One time we were driving close to him and there were huge rocks across the road. We stopped and some kids came up to the car and said for a "fee" they would move the rocks and let us pass. We paid them and they moved the rocks and let us pass.
Those people have to do whatever they can for money. |

It's about 65km from Mexico City, so no serious danger to us here.
A month after I first arrived in Mexico, Popo blew off in the biggest eruption it had had in 1200 years...a fine introduction to Mexico for me! We could see the ash cloud and from my rooftop at night you could see a red glow off in the distance. Very cool from just the right distance. |

I've climbed up the Popo. Well, not to the top. Just to the point where I couldn't breathe anymore.
Poor people do manage to move sometimes. Look at all of those living on the outskirts of D.F. who came from distant impoverished zones. |

I wasn't thinking of near like D.F., but near like those in the immediate alrededores. |

The volcano, which has been active since 1994, had experienced its largest known eruption in 2000, when it spewed a 2.5 mile-high column of ash and smoke, forcing thousands to evacuate. |
Apparently, you witnessed a rather spectacular moment
