Hi, Everyone. I am looking for work in the UAE, preferably at the university level. I have two dependents (my daughters) who are over the age of 18. Do you know if I will be able to bring them with me if I'm offered employment? Will the employer cover their airfare? Will they be able to get a resident visa? What does the visa process entail after being given an offer?

Thanks.

10 years back, I was told that an unwed daughter, no matter what age, is a dependent of the father in the UAE. Yes, That was for western families, too. I don't know if that still hold true.

You would need to check this carefully since I know of teachers who have been told that the cut-off age for dependent children for benefits is 18 years of age. I can't say whether there would be a difference for this if you are Muslim.

If the answer is affirmative from an employer, be sure to get it in writing.

Employers handle all visas.

Thanks to both of you. Is the visa process in UAE different from the Saudi visa process?

Yes... much easier. There is some paper chasing, of course. Much depends on the employer.

I think the problem is more likely to be not the visa but the health insurance -check what the cost would be. Plus what would your daughters do while here? If there's no college near where you work that they could go to, then they could get mighty bored.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check into it. My daughters are online students, so college won't be a problem.

I initially was trying to go back to Saudi (was there when the kids were little), but I just found out that a medical is required of them, and they have no insurance. I can only imagine how much it would cost. I assume that on a UAE visitor visa (initially), they would not have to take a medical examination.

Do you know if there's anything that needs to be done after the employer gets the work visa- aside from authentication of documents?

They may be only eligible for short-term visit visas... requiring regular visa runs, which could also get expensive.

Hopefully these are answers that your potential employer... or perhaps the UAE embassy could answer.

'Regular visa runs'- that should be exciting! Perhaps a bus trip to Kuwait wouldn't be too expensive.

I think you should check a map - there probably aren't any bus rides to Kuwait from UAE

Really? I read two different people's blogs about their trips to Kuwait from UAE.

Were they female? Men can make such trips, but not women. A GCC female with her spouse may be able to do it.

The three of you? Not a chance...

I think they were a couple, and I believe they went by car.

Yes... but you aren't a "couple" are you? Laughing I've assumed that you are a woman with 2 daughters... right?

From the UAE people tend to do visa runs to Oman by car; I know people who have done this regularly. It's a hassle - every 30 days (there is a 10 day grace period). There can be queues at the borders.
