Hello, I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience working as an English examiner for Cambridge, TELC, or any other recognized institution? I have heard that this is a good way to diversify one's experience in the world of English teaching. Specifically, are the opportunities plentiful, is the pay decent, and the certifications simple to obtain? Thanks in advance for your input.

I can speak for Cambridge and IELTS examining in the Benelux and Germany areas.

The work is decent and decently paid, but it is not normally full-time by any means. Established local teachers often become certified to do examining after hours or on some weekends.

The certifications often require some years of experience in ELT.
Here is the Cambridge website on the issue:

Quote:
Minimum Professional Requirements
Professional background:
education to first degree level or equivalent; *
a recognised language teaching qualification; *
at least 3 years or 1,800 hours relevant and recent teaching

The website above also has a form for nomination as an examiner.

Here you will find a list of testing centres in Germany:

I'm a Cambridge examiner in Italy, and can tell you that pay / conditions vary widely from centre to centre. It's not always an easy ride: you need to turn up for a co-ordination meeting at least once a year, then "standardise" via an annual online test. It helps me to get work (though as I never look for more work this is a moot point) and it helps me to prepare my students better for the oral exams - but that's about it for me in terms of professional kudos. In terms of annual income, it's a small %. You work flat out for a few weeks of the year.

Also for IELTS you must examine very regularly to avoid lapsing. I think it's once every 3 months or something like that.

I don't think Cambridge ESOL has the same regulation.
