I always had a place in my heart for Taiwan, since my first boyfriend was from there. Well his parents were, and they were the sweetest people ever. Anyway I applied to a bunch of schools there. I have an MA, am certified to teach K-12 in my state, and have over 7 years experience teaching to little kids. I thought i would get a couple offers. But instead I didn't even get replies. Is there a lot of competition right now or is there like a hiring freeze going on?

P.S. Before you jump down my throat no I haven't been reading the boards lately. Just in case this has been discussed before many times recently!!! Working fulltime and taking care of a sick person in my family so I am stealing away precious moments to be on the computer. Just to put my question out there because I am dying to know. Sorry there is just so much stuff to read nowadays. If you can answer my question great, thank you.

So far as I know there isn't a hiring freeze on - but many people will tell you that there is an abundance of competition for positions right now. I'm not personally sure that this is true; I've never had a problem finding positions but, then again, I am usually applying from 'in-country' so the prospective employers can actually meet me, instead of hiring sight-unseen.

Your qualifications certainly look good enough to secure you a decent job in a high school (instead of having to work the Buxibans) but they probably wouldn't be hiring until later in the summer.

I don't believe they can ever fill the jobs in a public school that whatevs would be qualified for. Of course that is what happens when they want to pay a certified teacher 55,000-60,000NT a month.

Not to mention that some schools only want to offer 10 month contract. That means no paid summer vacation.

So, you're saying that she should be able to find work in a High School right?

Yes, if she is a licensed teacher in the US.

Most licensed teachers go to countries that pay more.

If the poster is serious about teaching there is a good chance that she will not enjoy working in Taiwan.

I don't enjoy working anywhere, no matter the country. I believe a vast majority of people also don't enjoy working, period.

Even a terrible job in a language center in China pays 8500 RMB + housing.

That is 39,702 TWD. The average buxiban is offering 15 hours a week which comes out to around 40,500 TWD a month with no housing.

Not to mention there are language centers paying 12,000RMB a month.

A lot more jobs in China offer airfare as well.

DD Dragon Children's English School is paying between 9,000 and 15,000 on Dave's plus accommodation.
