Im teaching in japan, near tokyo. its brutal. good money but people are robots, "polite" (unfriendly).. hanging in there for my vacation, barely. but want to get excited to see normal happy people again....
my thoughts... I want to spend much of my time near beaches. mostly pattaya, hua hin, samet, chang. I also want to work in a week or so to kk. wondering, when should I go there? in the beginning after arriving at bkk or later from pattaya in the middle of my trip? should I go to kk at all? I want to see isaan and venture out of the tourist holes a bit more. though hua hin is pretty chill. how is the bus service to kk?
my interest are beaches, girls. pretty much what isn't in abundance in tokyo.. real girls with a pulse. one thai girls puts out the life juice of about 5 - 7 tokyo girls combined. and the beaches near tokyo are mostly crap... don't care about drinking or expats.
not planning to hit krabi or phuket. a bit far for this go round. cm is out.. no beaches... |

You're perceptions may need some adjustment, however to each his own. I would spend some time in Northern Thailand also, like Chiang Mai. Be forewarned the chicks here in Thailand can be friendly, but Thais are conservative and more often than not do not try to talk to you unless there is money involved (legitimate or illelegitimate). Personally I always find Japanese to be really nice people. |

Anybody considering Thailand for work or travel needs to begin following the news out of Bangkok immediately in order to to stay informed about events as they unfold on a daily basis.
Anyway, transportation infrastructure is pretty good in Thailand. Have you been there before or not? If you have 5 weeks you can fit in a lot. No time for details now though... off to class... |

You're living in a society that is heavily influence by Confucian principles. It's another culture. Another world. The Japanese version of friendliness is not the same as the version from wherever you grew up. People in Japan (and Korea) are generally less likely to interact with strangers, draw attention to themselves (cosplay fetishists aside), or respond in discussion without first thinking. Again, I offer only a generalization, but it's important to have an understanding of these differences so that you don't wrongly conclude that a whole nation/city/race/civilization of people are mere robots. |

kazuo62: if you want to know about japanese people in other parts of japan, pm me but its really for another topic. you should not be generlizing all japanese people as tokyo types though. sigmoid: yes I have been to thailand but not isaan. any other nice cities in isaan worth a longish bus ride/flight? plumpy nut: love your name, first off. been there already so I know about the people..
anyway, looking for travel advice and info on kk. if you liked it or not, is it worth my time away from the beaches... or other places in isaan perhaps...
that may be worth a trip |

Stumptowny, I have no interest in your opinions of Japanese people, but thanks for the invitation to pm you. I clearly stated (twice) that I was making only a generalization of the social tendencies of East Asian people, and that was only for the purpose of highlighting the faulty conclusion that they are unfriendly and somehow robotic. My direct response to the OP's concern is certainly appropriate for this thread. Your criticism of my response, however, is not. |

To The OP,
Beaches and Isaan Thai girls (especially in Pattaya and Hua Hin) are of abundance in the LOS and I do hope you have a lot of savings too cause you will definitely need it here. Also expect to earn a lot less of what you get paid in Japan as an EFL teacher unless of course you enjoy volunteering teaching English or doing summer camps with children. Good luck in your search! |

I didn't realize stickman gave travel advice, but then again I've never really read any of his stuff.
Anyway, Im not sure whats in Khon Kaen. For me, the attractions of the Northeast are the Khmer ruins, scenic vistas along the Mekong River and chilling out in the small towns and villages.
You might consider visiting a small Khmer temple (Prasat Hin Phi Mai) outside of Nakorn Ratchasima, then travel on to Nong Khai and head west through some towns along the Mekong River into Loei province, if you have enough time.
Alternatively, you can head to lower Isan and go to a Khmer temple on the top of an extinct volcano (Prasat Hin Phanom Rung) in Buriram province before heading to Ubon Ratchathani province. There is a village called Khong Chiam where the Mun River meets the Mekong and a park with prehistoric rock paintings nearby. From there you can also travel up the Mekong through towns like Mukdahan and up to Nakorn Phanom before heading back to Bangkok or just head back from Ubon.
Both of those routes are somewhat off the beaten track, but there are hotels/guesthouses in the provincial capitals and basic accommodation in the villages. Two other places that come to mind are Sukhothai (actually in central Thailand) and Khao Yai Natl Park. Do some research to see if these places would appeal to you. Also, keep your eye on the latest weather and political news |
