BBC coverage up to its usual tricks:

Special points awarded for snide comments about the policeman's level of English.

Exactly. And how many foreign news agencies would produce this type of rubbish, mocking them?

How many Spanish cops speak Ukrainian? Or Italians? What about the Saudi police? I bet you wont find many of them who are fluent in Ukrainian? Chinese cops, Japanese????
What on earth is your point? English is an international language, Ukrainian is not.

Actually, it would be just as fair to say that Russian is the international language in this region.

Apart from linguistic considerations, running after a policeman on the street to ask for directions is usually not a good idea anywhere in Sovietland...

Gentlemen, please! This isn't the BBC here, you know. Civility and decorum, if you please.

sorry sasha. (why do i always think sasha is a girl's name?)

the phrasebook comment was directed at the reporter who
mocks the uke police for not speaking the english. it was
not directed at the shiekh. i apologize for any misunderstanding.

That's OK, Choudoufu, Sasha is a a name for girls and boys - the diminutive form comes from both Aleksandr and Aleksandra.

In fairness to Sheikh, your comments were preceded by a quote of his, so he would naturally have thought, as did I, that that is where the direction lay. However, I am delighted that we have re-established a cordial Brotherhood of Man, despite the best efforts of the BBC to sow dissent amongst the ranks. Let us now toast each others' health and eternal friendship!

Your apologies are accepted. No hard feelings (how do you say that in Russian?) In any case, I just hope Spain dont win.

I'm not sure the Russians ever say it! But the closest I can think of is 'Забудем прошлое', which means 'we'll forget the past'. Or 'начнем все заново с чистого листа', which is like 'we turn a new, blank page'. Clean slates etc.

I'm sure that the Polish hooligans and the Russian ones have exchanged these thoughts in recent days... hic!

Having watched Russian tv coverage of the sport, there seem to have been a lot of Polish fans beating seven shades out of Russian supporters (I'm sure no Russian fans would get up to such skulduggery). Reminds me of Britain a few decades ago; glad these iron curtain chappies are catching up with the modern world.
