What is the state of Zen Buddhism in Latin America? Where would one go to find an active temple, or at least an active discussion. How about if one wanted to study zen practice in English?

To seek the truth, cut through the shadows, and go closer to the source. The sound of one hand clapping is no different in South America than it is in Asia, or anywhere for that matter.

In an area of the world that is predominately Catholic, I'd say pretty slim.

That's not entirely the case, NG. Here's useful link for the OP: http://ebmc.wordpress.com/2009/07/30/buddhist-centers-in-mexico/.

I dont know about the majority of Latin America, but I can tell you that there is a large temple in Guayaquil Ecuador. There are quite a few Zen Buddists here, in part because there is a large Asian population.

I'm a practicing Buddhist who lived in Costa Rica for six months two years ago. There are a handful of Tibetan Buddhist centers in San Jose, two American, but Chinese Buddhist-ordained teachers running an int'l prison program out of their home (they offer no sitting practice or anything; too busy with the program), and this, that I found through a google search:

Casa Zen de Costa Rica
Address: Apartado Postal 260-3100 Santa Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica
Tradition: Mahayana, Zen Buddhism
Phone: 506 244-3532
E-mail: [email protected]
Website: http://www.casazen.org/

I know nothing about this group, but it's worth checking out. I loved CR. Hope to go back after a stint in SE Asia. Good luck! BTW, Vietnam is your best bet for Zen Buddhism. There is even a temple started by Thich Nhat Hahn there, although he has lived for some time in France at Plum Village, which you undoubtedly know.
