It's in Istanbul. If you come to Turkey without a job or connections, you're probably going to start out in the culture capital of the old world, so why not head over to the Asian side check it out for yourself?
I will say that from what I've seen of them, the Asian parts of Istanbul (outside Kadiky) are nicer than the European parts (outside of the old city), but are also harder to find your way around when you're new, as you'd be taking the buses and dolmuşes a lot of the time.

Dear ciarak121,

Both Cekmekoy and Sancaktepe are situated on the Asian side of Istanbul and are about 15km from the centre of Istanbul. They are new residential areas with lots of villas. They are regarded as very safe areas with lots of green forests nearby. Ozyegin University (private) has opened a second campus there.

You will find supermarkets (eg. Migros) just about everywhere, but if you want to visit the key areas of Istanbul for a concert or cinema, it will take you about 90 mins-2 hours to get there. Don't even think about getting a taxi - it will cost you a fortune.

Shopping locally would not be a problem at all - there are supermarkets and small "corner shops" where you can get the basics : milk, bread, fruit etc.

Your school should provide a shuttle between Cekmekoy and Sancaktepe and they will probably provide school lunch too.

It's only in the evenings/weekends if you want to go to the cinema/concert/pub on the European side of Istanbul (eg. Taksim area) that you will spend 90 mins-2 hours getting there in the traffic across the bridge.....then back.

Turkish people are generally extremely hospitable, so get to know your neighbours, and you will soon be invited around for dinner. You might be able to pick up some private lessons in the area too. Good luck !
