Hello everybody! Newbie here! I've been lurking on all the forums surrounding the NET program for a while now and I had a few questions about my particular situation. I'm moving from higher education teaching at the college level to K-12. I'd really appreciate any advice you guys could give me.

Qualifications lowdown:

MATESOL from US university
Bachelor of Arts in English Literature
1+ year teaching ESL at a Refugee Development Center
5 years as a ESL Writing Center Specialist (Tutor and Tutor Trainer)
3 years as a ESL university instructor in the USA (Also a summer semester at Jiangxi University of Science and Technology in China through a faculty exchange program at my university)

(I'm aware that much of this experience might not count as it is before K-12 teacher certification)

I will have my K-12 certification in ESL next summer 2013.

My Seemingly Endless Questions:

1. Am I CURRENTLY qualified for any position in either PNET or SNET? The thought of waiting years to apply is making me twitchy, but I'm willing to do it. Should I wait?

2. I'm a 27 year old African-American woman. Frankly, I've been told being Black could hurt/kill my chances of actually obtaining a position. Thoughts?

3. I'm trying to decide between taking the certification exams for elementary education, secondary English or both? Is both even possible?

4. If qualified, where on the salary scale would my qualifications or lack of qualifications place me?

5. Is it possible to apply to both programs at the same time?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my concerns. I'd be forever grateful for any and all responses.

Apply. They are a law unto themselves when they decide if they will accpet you or not.

This isn't Korea.....

Personally, I would do secondary as I can't stand primary kids, and on the NET scheme you can eventually make more than the primary. However, if you like small, dirty, snotty kids, then do the primary.

Well, even if you were at the bottom, you would still be making good coin as a result of the special allowance.....but you have experience so that would mean even more! Result!

haven't tried so wouldn't know.....it may say on the website somewhere.....or someone else here might be able to answer.

As has been said, mainly by me, many times, the EdB are a law unto themselves and just because you apply one year doesn't stop you applying again another......I did and here I am.

Thanks for your super quick reply!

From what I've read on here the EDB are a crapshoot and you never know if more qualifications or experience will guarantee you a chance at a position. I didn't know if I was technically qualified for either SNET or PNET. And if with my background I had more of a "chance" with one or the other.

Also, I rarely pay attention to race, but after the second or third time of hearing it would be difficult gaining a position with a school a girl can begin to get a bit paranoid lol. I had heard the rumors about Korea, but I figure people either care about race or they don't.

Both small kids and teenagers can have their bad days, especially when attitudes and temper tantrums erupt and make you feel like screaming, but I usually like working with both populations. Is primary really worse in Hong Kong? How are you liking your experience?

Thanks for the info on SNET's having the potential to make more.
I'm not sure with my qualifications which category I would be, because I don't have any k-12 experience post qualification. Or what each category even makes. Though I've frequently heard ranges of US $2800-5000 Would any of my teaching experience matter or count in that regard?

So I guess it would be possible to apply and then add my certification to my application later?

Not having worked as an EdB NET here, I won't comment on the financial side of things, but unlike Joshua I have to say I much prefer kindergarten and primary to secondary school, in HK or anywhere - it's horses for courses Smile

Yes, it is. (Or at least it was 5 years ago and I'm not aware of that having changed. Would be happy to stand corrected on that by anyone with more recent experience, though.)

However, you'd have to submit separate applications for each with separate lots of supporting documents. If you got interviews for both, you'd be interviewed separately by completely different people and separate decisions would be made as to whether you'd passed the interviews. It's possible to pass both interviews.

To be honest with you, OP, you don't seem to have any experience at all with Primary age kids, so, unless they've become much more desperate for teachers than either used to be the case or I was aware of, then I'm not sure how much joy you might get out of a PNET application. Applying to the NET scheme is quite hard work as regards the various hoops you have to jump through and bureaucratic frustrations you have to deal with. I'd only advise applying to both PNET and SNET if you were one of those people whose qualifications and experience would give you a significant chance of success with both.

Thanks for the information! It's good to know that I can apply to both. At the moment I honestly don't have a preference between primary and secondary as I've worked with both groups. I did not include the primary experience because I knew it wouldn't be counted and cited as irrelevant. (i.e. substitute teaching, private tutor, youth coordinator) Don't want it to sound like I'm interested in primary on a whim Very Happy I don't mind hard work. I wasn't sure if any of my experience counted as I hadn't completed my certification

Can one get a NET job with just an M.A. TESOL and ESL / EFL experience at the university level? Or does one need a teaching certificate to qualify?

This question has been done to death - if you search about you'll find plenty on it. Basically, assuming you have a first degree as well as the masters, yes it's possible but odds against. PNET more likely than SNET, and if employed you're stuck at the bottom end of the pay scale - but that's still quite good if you include the special allowance.
