Dear Friends,

My American chum is over 60 and is looking for a teaching/writing job anywhere in the world. Could you give us a lead on any organizations that would employ him - give him a visa even?

Very grateful,

S

I would think Latin America or Asia would be the place to start.

Over 60? I doubt that anyone would give him a visa... certainly not in the Gulf... nor likely anywhere in the Middle East. Perhaps Morocco if he has some EFL experience and some kind of cert like CELTA.

There are plenty of people working over 60 in LA. Its not really a huge detriment, although in part that is probably because most of LA does not offer social services (so they dont care if you die in their country). I know one guy over 60 came from China and another from Egypt who I had met. So obviously at least some kind of jobs are available in those places for older people. Both were certified teachers though.

The catch in the Middle East is that if you are already on contract, they will usually keep renewing even up to age 70 if they feel that you can still handle the job. But they won't give a visa to a new teacher who is over 60, and in some places over 55.
