Since not many places ''clearly state'' their starting salaries, let alone say they'll increase it after a few months, I'm still a bit doubtful. The figures seem wishful to me, but if that's what you have experienced, perhaps you've been very fortunate. Or maybe the market truly is changing.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be too surprised if such numbers were for short-term contracts (1, 2, maybe 3 months) in peak periods.
Any other recent job-seekers at language schools / kindy playgroups etc with numbers and experiences to share? |

@kowlooner,
Even if you go on geoexpat, you can see what centre owners claim they pay their teachers and the rate is in the range of what I said. It is quite easy to get if you spend the time to find a job. If you are not patient and take the first job offer, then heck you might be making 12k.
Also, you have to remember that there are a LOT of new centers in Hong Kong. A lot of center owners have no idea how to run it, they might be new money from China or whatever, and seriously there are centers that do not know the education department rules, they do not know how to schedule classes, or run the place. These places are difficult to work for. Once they realize they can not make much profit, they will be stressed and blame the teacher for every parent comment.
These people, new money, with new centers are confused locals usually. They know how they were treated and the best locals get paid is 9-12k so they try to hire a foreigner at the same rate and the fact is that some foreigners just don't know and want the visa so they take these jobs. It is difficult I think and contributes to higher turnover as it is not practical to live on these low salaries.
These are all 12 month contracts too.
If you are a foreign person and willing to work for 12k, send me your CV. I can hire you, very busy now, and 12 month lock-in contract. |
