As I understand it, polls usually have a higher rate of English support for Scottish independence than Scottish, thanks to English subsidies to the periphery and the West Lothian question, and that the separatists never poll a majority in Scotland (by contrast I believe that the Quebecois did at times poll for independence).
So I'm guessing, quite unlikely, particularly if the EU makes it clear that they'll force the Scots to adopt the euro, as seems likely.
I don't think there's ever been a case of part of an integral part of developed country voting to leave that country, assuming that the territory in question is at roughly the same level of economic development. (Algeria and Iceland are the only cases I can think of where part of a developed country seceded at all.) When people already have internal self-determination (as is the case of all developed countries), and a good thing going as part of the whole, the economic risks of going it alone ultimately aren't worth it.

English subsidies to the periphery are a myth peddled by Lord Rothermere and the other Empire Loyalists. An examination of the figures shows that North Sea Oil has subsidised the de-industrialisation of Britain. Not to meantion the illegal neo-colonial wars and occupations that Westminster seems to be addicted to.

I think that is quite an assumption. I don't know how this is likely. In fact, it is not even at all clear if Scotland would remain part of the EU if it left the UK, never mind adopt the euro. |

My impression was that the SNP has been saying that Scotland will be automatically admitted into the EU bu virtue of being part of an EU member state, and will be allowed to keep using the pound.
And also that the EU wants all its members except the UK, Denmark, and Sweden to adopt the Euro as soon as they're economically capable of it.
Here's a link which I'm sure will bring complaints about "capitalist piggies" from at least one of you and might well spur complaints about English provincialism from the other. ;)

Piggies! Grrrr!
The issue, as I understand it re Scotland and the EU, is that 'Scotland' never joined the EU. The UK did. The UK would still exist in some form after the Scots leave. It was the UK that negotiated membership terms with the EU.Therefore Scotland may indeed have to re-apply. However, nobody really knows what will or would happen. Major legal conundrum. Should keep the lawyers happy for years. |
