Interesting topic. I'm kinda in the same boat. Born in the U.S. but parents were from South America so I am often mistaken as Filipino or Indian. |

You won't have a problem with being non-white. You will get hired with the standard wages. However you might have to wait untill the current semester ends, I believe it is in September, until some positions open up.
No problem?
Tell that to the South African Teacher who fronted up to my school and was told not to come back the next day because of her 'flavour'. Ironically, she was replaced by another South African with a much lighter shade of skin
The jobs for MOD EDIT aren't at the good schools with those little luxuries like air con, white boards and classes of less than 40!
Sad but that's what is being practiced. |

To teach English in the LOS the main qualifications one must have....regardless of where you come from or what colour your skin is...are to be an actor and entertainer...that's why edutainers are always in high demand at language schools, colleges, international schools and universities. It also helps if you can do Thai classical dance in class and make students laugh! |

Dont be ridiculous. It's getting old. Language schools are a business and so the prime concern is that the students are happy which means they need to be engaged which sometimes means simply entertaining them.
Most colleges in Thailand are a joke.
Universities and Inter schools require you to be an educator. And a good educator knows that acting/being on display/motivating and engaging are all huge parts of being a teacher/educator. Learning doesn't have to be have this "fun" tag, but there is no reason people cant enjoy themselves while learning and no reason a teacher cant attempt to make the learning process engaging and interesting. It's about taking pride in your work even if your "superiors" dont/cant acknowledge/appreciate your work.
IMHO, motivation might be the single most important aspect of a leaner. In many cases it is up to the educator to help their students find their motivation (especially in younger learners).
The biggest problem with EFL in Thailand is that the majority of "teachers" here do not want to be teachers and have very little training in what it means to be a successful teacher (regardless of what happens in many Thai schools). They will probably never be that good at teaching anything anywhere (not just Thailand) until they have the desire and motivation to become better teachers. Going to Dubai or other countries for the cash might be your motivation but, as a teacher, you still have to "act" like you want to be at your job even if actual teaching isn't your motivation.
Very famous teaching quotes that many educators (not edutainers) around the world would agree with:
"...In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important."
- Bill Gates
Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths pure theatre.
- Gail Godwin (educator)
To the OP:
Yes discrimination based on race does exist in Thailand and there is little you can do about it. If you are simply talking about teaching EFL, then most schools will prefer a white skinned native speaker with a neutral (N.Amer/British) accent The better schools will hire teachers based on merits, skills and attitude, not skin color. I know of many teachers from African countries that are currently employed teaching maths or sciences at good schools earning more than most TEFLers will ever make. Sorry to have to enlighten you Josef K. |

I am reading the comments regarding nonwhites working in Thailand. I definitely am non white, with a B.S., M.S., and TEFL Certificate. With these qualifications will it be difficult to gain employment? Also, are non whites respected with the students and their fellow colleagues?

Non - White Native English speaking teachers have no problem finding work in Thailand. EFL teachers are respected by both students and their colleagues. Good luck in the LOS! |

Pay no attention to this type of post. It's blatant sarcasm is neither informative or humorous. TBO, it is getting old EE.
Non-White teachers DO face discrimination and CAN face difficulty finding decent work. They WILL face blatant racism and ignorance if working outside Bangkok or other major tourist type destinations.
Non-White teachers CAN find work and CAN find good work if they have the ability and resume to teach maths or sciences for example. I know 2 or 3 Non-white teachers from African countries making 60,000+ baht/mth (in Bangkok). All teaching maths and/or sciences.
There are tons of blue eyed white 20 somethings out there to teach English that most schools would prefer, BUT there are less desirable locations and jobs (lower pay) that will hire Non-white and Non-native speaking teachers. |
