|
|
Hi friends. I'm in China now and need to get away.
I'm considering the Philippines as a jump in point to start getting rid of my wanderlust.
Considering Manila, than to....???
It seems that flying and taking a ferry around is the easiest and cheapest.
Can you make some suggestions where to go and where NOT to go?
Much appreciated.
thanks. |

There are 2 places to avoid:
MANILA... caps for a reason.
The south west of Mindano (unless being in combat zone is your idea of a holiday).
CEBU (as your entry gateway) and the Visayas region (central Philippines) are your best bet for a 1st holiday. You avoid the slum pit that is Manila, avoid the typhoons that are commonplace in the summer/fall (it is south of the typhoon belt) and prices are generally better.
Personally, for your 1st foray into the country may I recommend Alona beach (Bohol) or Boracay. Google and you will see why.

I was thinking of jumping in at Manila, stay a night ( I don't mind slums - I grew up in NYC and have been to mexico many times).
Then catch a ferry or plan to Cebu or Boracay.
I know some parts of the area are combat zones indeed.
Recommend fly or ferry between islands? |

Manila to Cebu or Manila to Boracay = fly. Only a fool would go by ferry.
In both cases there are many flights per day and domestic flights are cheap.
And avoiding Manila is not because of the slums but the fact that you are seen as a walking ATM machine and there are lots of people who will try to make a withdrawal.
Cebu (CEB) has lots of international arrivals and is a much nicer place to land if you have that option.

No demand for foreigners as teachers ... the Philippines is a net exporter of English speaking teachers and there are enough foreigners with residence visas (13a-married to a Philippine citizen) or returning Filipinos (often from the US) that they don't need to look for any.

I understand it. I meet PLENTY of Filipinos in China. Working as teachers or musicians.
They tell me making $1000 usd a month here is much better than what they could earn at home. |
