You guys have been very helpful regarding teaching in Honk Kong. I just had a few more NET specific questions. All answers are greatly appreciated.
After reading the EDB site and the forums I'm a bit confused on the salary/category scale. I was attempting to complete the qualifications for Category 1:
Have an MATESOL, a BA English Literature and will be certified to teach K-12 ESL, Secondary English 6-12, and Elementary Ed K-6 next MAY.
But I also read that category has nothing to do with salary scale and it all depends on how many years of post-qualification experience you have. As I would be newly certified this would equal ZERO.
1. Is anyone familiar with how this works for either PNET or SNET? If I'm blessed enough to secure a position, what would starting pay look like?
I am also completing my certification through an alternative certification program at the University of West Florida. It will result in a Professional Teaching certificate from the state of Florida.
2. Does this equal the PGDE that is requested?
3. When is the best time to apply if I don't complete my program until May 2013?
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions. I'm very grateful for any information you have to share. |

Hi Phoenix,
The board here has been very helpful to all of us.
Here's what I know based on my own research. The NET scheme starts advertising in January of each year (at least, that's what it says on their site), and they've hiring for positions beginning late August of the same year.
If you're graduating in May, then theoretically you should be able to start by August. In your application, you'd probably need to include a letter or a university transcript. (You could always try contacting them to be sure.)
Salary-wise, I also find their scale with all its caveats a bit confusing. It looks like the starting salary for a B. Ed. degree would be 24,000HK, not including the housing allowance.
Hope that helps a bit. |

The deadline is in February I believe. To apply for the government NET scheme which benefits with the 17k (or I forgot this years amount) housing allowance.
Apply and indicate what is in progress and to be finished on the application.
If not, you can apply directly to schools, however, you need to negotiate pay and most likely it is much lower. |

Send anything you have in to the EdB, with ALL the relevant papers to prove it. They will then tell you where you are on the scale.
Stop giving yourself a headache - they will do it for you. |
