Actually, in Turkey being an outsider means that you'll probably be dealt with much more leniently for not knowing the social norms etc. Even sometimes the coppers on the street will be softer on a foreigner than a local. Depends what order of mischief you are up to.
Usually the worst thing that happens to unwitting foreigners in Turkey is that they are conned into buying a vastly over-priced carpet. |

Really? Every Turk who's ever tried to sell me a carpet has told me they're offering me a very good price. At cost even, because they want me to tell my friends.

So we can perhaps be forgiven for thinking that you have lots of carpets at home then Q?
Wearing gold on the street is ok, but lets be honest guys, it is exceedingly naff! Do you want to look like a maganda or some cheap floozie? |

Depends how it is done. I think that rather large golden hoop earrings are the height of elegance! |

Too much of that yellow metal makes you look like a gypsy, or worse! |

"They will be harsher with you and you will be made an example of should you wish to go so far as break laws and so on."
Generally I totally agree with you, but this isn't the case in Turkey. The police are not so nice to Turks, but exceptionally polite and helpful to foreigners in need. |

As far as I know, and this was just hearsay even at the time of hearing, back in the 1990s the police were 're-trained' to stop harassing foreigners and tourists. Was damaging the tourist industry. |
