Hello Everyone,

I have a question I'd like to throw out to you all --

Do any of you know universities in Japan that hire English teachers who are over 70 years old? I'm writing on behalf of my own dear father, who will turn 71. He's been teaching in Japan for over 35 years at different universities, is healthy, and wants to continue teaching because he says he loves it. He's got a MATESOL and some publications.

I guess at most places, the age limit is 65/70.

Thanks for reading this.

I am really sorry, but just why in the world do you have to write on behalf of him? He should be far more knowledgeable than most people about this matter!

Short answer, retirement age is 60-65, depending on type of uni. He may get something part-time like most uni teachers these days, but nothing more. Doesn't he know all this?

I'm more tech savvy than he is, that's why I thought by posting on dave's forum I might be able to get some helpful info. As I said, I was just wondering if anyone knew of anyone working past 70.

Let's keep the tone respectful! Very Happy Thanks for your comment anyway!

Does he actually want full-time work at a university?

Hi Glenski,

Part-time or full-time.

For full-time, I'd say he should not count on any being available for him. For part-time, even Japanese teachers (of any subject) find it hard to get after retirement age. Like I wrote earlier, with his 35 years of experience here, he should already know the ropes, and I would suspect he has made enough contacts to know where to apply and who to ask.
