As far as my classes are concerned, few if any of my class members are really interested in this story. Storm in a teacup; of more interest to foreign media; just a PR stunt by the band's management - these are the few comments I have heard from students.
To judge from foreign media, this is a burning issue in Russia, both in support and against. But my own experience here does not bear this out. Only remarkable thing is the strong lack of interest.
How about other teachers? |

I don't know anyone here in Moscow who cares about this story either. From the information I have, they're not even a real band, just puppets for someone 'higher up' (I don't know who). |

I met one person who actively sought my opinion. His own was that the singers were indeed 'hooligans'. It doesn't seem to be of interest to most of the people I know, although I am not sure just how interested in current affairs most Russians are, perhaps because standard tv news coverage in Russia is rather stultifying. |

I don't have a single student who has indicated any interest in the story. One of my friends (Russian) is adamantly against them, but other than that, I only know about it from foreign media. |

By and large a non-story among my students and friends in the CIS as well. The Orthodox Christians I know seem to think they were generally desecrating the church with their actions and should be punished but the 2 year sentence is a bit much.
It also tells me that both the media and the politicians are frantic to find anything to distract the governed from the continuing financial problems of the world by grasping at anything. Don't the Presidents, Foreign Ministers, State Departments and Prime Ministers have something more important to be dealing with right now? |

Seems like I am not mistaken then in viewing this as a matter of little importance within Russia and the Near Abroad.
My own take on this is that it is a little rich for foreign pop stars and all to be lecturing about this issue as though it is solely one of freedom of artistic expression and free speech. Something over which world media outlets regularly seem to bash Russia. However, I'm pretty sure that if something similar happened in St. Peter's or in Canterbury Cathedral, there would not be such an automatic defence of 'human rights' etc. |

Interesting...
Judging by the coverage here in the US, at least, they're making it out to be a huge issue. |

I think the US media mostly enjoy saying the name of the band publically. |

Good point, that's probably a large part of it. |

Actually, Merriam-Webster says yes.
And I've double-checked if I spelt Merriam correctly as well |
