Is it customary for a recruiter to provide a new employee with an advance on their arrival? Just a question. I was told by a friend that they do and my recruiter doesn't. |

It certainly isn't standard anywhere in the Gulf. Neither of my Oman employers did... they were direct hire. For any new hires, ask before you go... and have a back-up plan.
Through the years, my experience ranged from an employer that gave none, and was famous for taking 4 or more months to get you on the payroll or housing allowance, but two days after being paid in late December, I went out and bought a new car with my ATM/debit card. I knew ahead of time and was prepared. Then there was HCT in the UAE that handed me an envelope with my $8000 furniture allowance and an expense allowance for my first week, the morning after I arrived.

It doesn't hurt to ask when you arrive.
My employer doesn't usually give advances, but when I arrived in Oman in autumn of 2010, they did give me OR 300 to help me get through the first three weeks. They simply subtracted the 300 from my first paycheck.
My employer provides housing and furnishings, so I just needed enough for food before my first paycheck. |

Yes, I also got a loan on arrival from ELS. They were very good that way. |

University of Nizwa provide advances for new hires, which is then deducted via the next two months salary. |
