Hello, i taught in Japan for 2 years and 8 months 5 years ago (205-2008) with Aeon. When i left I never applied to get my pension money back because i thought i might go back & teach there again one day. That never happened, but i'm going back to Japan this winter for vacation and while im there i'd like to know if i can get that pension money back?

I still have my Alien registration card & the passport with the Japanese work visa that they issued to me, can i still go to the immigration office in Tokyo (near Shinagawa if i remember correctly?) & apply to get my pension money back?

Thanks in advance for any advice or feedback on the matter.

Nope.

Time limit for application for the initial refund is 12 months IIRC, and then two years for the tax that's withheld on the pension withdrawal.

Damn, so i can't get it back at all? Even if i have my ARC and documents? I recall it'd amount to about $3000 for almost 3 years work, no?

Is there an immigration hotline there for foreigners? When i taught in Korea they had an immigration hotline for foreigners in English.

Thanks again for any clarification.

You waited too long.
http://www.nenkin.go.jp/n/www/share/pdf/existing/main/individual_02/pdf/dattai/english.pdf

"In order to receive your Lump-sum Withdrawal Payments (the Payments), you need to file your application within two years since your departure from Japan."

Immigration has nothing to do with pension. Different branch of the government.

Also, how much would it have been for 2 years and 8 months work? just curious.

So what if the applicant has worked more than 36 months, e.g., 48 months or more?

Wouldn't they receive more money back from the pension scheme?

If you have not put in your token 25 years, you get back only the amount dictated by the last 3 years of putting into the system.

See Note 2 on the first page of that link.

If you are Canadian I think there isn`t the agreement between Japan and Canada about pensions.

Nope. There's a pension totalization agreement between the two countries, which may be what you're thinking of, but that's only applicable to people that are in Japan (or Canada) on an employment transfer visa, not a work visa. The Japan-Canada tax treaty covers pensions as we've been discussing in all other cases.
