What kind of salary should be expected given cost of living and inconveniences? What's quality of life in Tripoli like? How have things been in the last few months?

Libya's fine and if you get to Trip you'll make a killing freelancing. I returned at the end of April but it's a direct hire oil gig...same one I was on before the war of liberation.

This country has a bright future as the Libs know what they want and don't want.

Can you enter Libya and stay without a visa in order to freelance? What is the rate you can charge, how much is housing, etc.?

Tourist visas were recently suspended with no reason given according to Tripoli's English language newspaper.

Housing appears to cost in the $1500-$5000/month range.

How much can you get per hour tutoring?

I've heard about $40 USD/hour, which isn't great considering many of my co-workers in Bogota charged that as a minimum for privates.

If housing runs $1500 to $5000 a month, $40 an hour is either close to un-doable or flat-out completely un-doable. I would love to work in Africa, but here in Guangzhou I average about $32 per hour private tutoring and pay just over $600 a month rent, this in a fairly high-rent district. How do people, aside from government officials and oil company executives, afford this city? Hardly seems that one could "make a killing" freelancing here.

Exactly. Jobs pay for housing and tutoring would be to supplement your income.

Certainly Libya could have a bright future - but local friends in Tripoli tell me that there is random gunfire most nights.

We make a lot more than that Scott....a lot and a payrise is in the pipeline. Peter, the gunfire is often weddings and people arsing about. I'm not saying there is no risk but it's not crazy. Of course bandits are taking advantage of the fact that there are no police and that's to be expected. We're in the middle of nowhere and see none of it. I've been beaching it in the Med a lot this trip.

Very interesting comments. I'm looking forward to being on the ground there and seeing what the situation is like.

I do not doubt the word of my learned colleague Sharter. However my contact IS working in Libya for two thousand sterling a month.

I'm in Tripoli now and quite like it so far (give me a few months though before I give a real opinion). I'm not making much money at all for the country but am satisfied so far with the renumeration package and how my employer has treated me.
