I'd like to hear from teachers in other parts of the world with students who use English for communicating with other nationalities.
If you are such a teacher then please drop me a line.
(Or if you know such a teacher then please forward this message to them, with many many thanks :)

Why? I'm planning to help our students understand English spoken with different accents. It will need a bit of experimenting and keen students, but I'm sure something great will come out of this.

I'm still formulating the idea, so your input will help shape the plan and make future lessons equally useful for your students.
If you would like to come on board then please drop me a line. (Thanks for reading this, I hope to hear from you)

Probably half the learners I currently teach are there for social reasons.

The other half need to use English for a variety of purposes, among which are:

  • Academic purposes - presenting in English, submitting papers in English to academic journals, collaborating in English with researchers from other universities
  • Business purposes - often with manufacturers in China/Taiwan, but also with American parent companies

Among the social learners, a great many say they want to "understand movies without subtitles" (this usually makes me want to slap them), while others are interested in making friends abroad (this doesn't elicit quite such strong urges, although very few actually forge anything more than superficial relationships, in my experience).

All three goals are lingua franca reasons. If your cohort have similar motivations, please slap the ones who want to understand American films without subtitles. If you have learners whose motivations match those of mine, then we might be able to work something out. I'll do an informal survey with my students and see what my employer thinks.

Interesting point you raise here:

You're on Smile

Well done, Mr Monkey - you got it. I appreciate the discussions this has started on other forums, but so far you are the only person to address my request. Your prize is in the post. (It's a banana.)
Please keep me posted, and remember it doesn't have to be 'formal' in the first instance - we're in beta testing mode here. Just a couple of recordings to test how it can work, see how we can pull it apart to get answers/feedback from our groups.

David

I would not call movie listening a form of USING English as lingua franca. Languages involve two-way communication, so writing or speaking to others would make more sense. Using it on a broader scale, too.

As for this:

...you seriously need to reread those other posts better!
