Not sure about that but the average Taiwanese is richer due to PPP - purchasing power parity.
South Korea is doing better than before. I think the average salary is around 30,000 US a year. With their lower cost of living, maybe Korea is a better place to save money. |

| Hi and thanks for the replies. I have been to all of those places but I truly thought Japan was cleaner, nicer, and more advanced. I also never felt alien in Japan like I did in other places. I think that, money aside, Japan is a really nice place to live. |

Well, a full-time uni lecturer can make about double the standard eikaiwa salary.
In my case, I am making less money now (dispatch ALT) than I was nine years ago at my first year at Nova. I work a lot less as well.
As far as supply of teachers and the industry itself, there will always be hundreds of manga geeks dying to come over here, the salaries/working conditions will NOT improve and Japan is slowly going downhill and turning into a great big nursing home. |

Well, if that's what you want to do then I reckon Japan is still a good place for you. The chicks are as hot as ever, Western guys (if that's what you are) still get an unfair advantage in the dating leagues, and it's still possible to earn enough to live on, have a little fun, and put aside some savings. |

True. I know an American with a Taiwanese wife. She prefers to live in Yokohama.
Pay in Taiwan isn`t so good. I heard about a university job in Taipei that just pays $19,000 US per year.
Try walking around Taipei and breathe in that air. Yep, Japan is better in some ways. |

In terms of things such as living costs, China looks better. However, if you consider the total quality of life, Japan is much, much better. There's no terrible pollution nor are there the disabled beggars. Everyone in Japan understands 標準語 (standard Japanese) but, outside of huge cities (especially Beijig), most people don't understand Mandarin and instead speak their local dialect. Japan is far safer than China as well (not just crime but accidents and food, for example). |

What about Korea? I read that, when cost of living is taken into account, the Koreans are now richer than the Japanese. |
I've been to Corea. Contrary to what they want you to believe, it isn't "sparkling". |
