I've wanted to come to Russia for some time (currently teaching in China)

This seriously put me off!

Can anyone enlighten me as to what is being said?

Unbelievable! I watched the first 2 minutes and couldn't go on.

Don't be put off, no local high school of that standard would ever be recruiting foreign EFL teachers.

I also have some concerns about the quality of language that is being taught in English classes in China:

(бля is a common Russian expletive - the meat in the sandwich of Russian swearing)

Feral youth gone wild. No, this is not typical of most classrooms here. Perhaps it is a reform school somewhere. Hard to follow what is being said - mainly swear words. Trying to look hard, but one babooshka would be all it would take to put manners on them.

I certainly wouldn't let a crappy video of some gopnik teens doing what they do best put you off coming to Russia.

Yes, the way the teachers stand back in that reserved, non-confrontational way does suggest it's a class for people with behavioural issues.

If it was a normal high school, I'd expect the teacher to break a metre-rule over the kid's head (I'm told that's not unheard of).

Yes, that's a point. Add to that the first teacher is male. Not typical in Russia to have a male teacher. So, perhaps he's specially trained for these hooligans.

There was something to be said for shipping this antisocial type to Siberia with no provisions...

Nyet. Siberians are civilised people; you can't send them there.

Don't worry, while language schools aren't completely exempt from problems, you are unlikely to experience this level of misbehaviour.

In a few years those boys will be in the army where they can enjoy some good, old-fashioned dedushchina.

If you search on youtube, you can find similar examples from classrooms in the USA, and probably other countries as well. I wouldn't let this discourage you from coming over.

I think you'll find British classrooms less than sedate as well.

I watched the film Class of 1984 the other night, it's set in an American school a bit like this and portrays the most extreme example possible of poorly disciplined students. For what it's worth I've found Russian teens far more respectful towards teachers than Spanish ones.

The kids on the video reminded me of quite disturbed adolescents I have worked with in the past. Not the worst, as much of the violence was in fact controlled and intended to be annoying rather than dangerous. Anyway, I agree, these are unusual for Russia. Most adolescents in Russia are quite respectful.

Send them to live in the English Midlands. They would fit in very well with "Modren English Yoof".

I think you could see something similar at the worse public schools in any country, certainly in the US.

Anyway, foreign teachers never teach in public schools in Russia as far as I know.
