This question is just out of curiosity. If one is here on a regular humanities visa and gets fired, for how long is one able to stay in Japan?

As long as your visa is valid. Just because you lose a job doesn't mean you lose the visa.

Technically, you have to notify immigration in 2 weeks. You used to be able to stay three months, but not longer without a job unless you had a valid reason. Not sure how it works now.
