You've already stated you'll be turning it down, but fyi, if you live in a city and commute to the same place everyday by train/subway, the allowance will equal the cost of a monthly pass.
If you have a choice of routes they will pay for the cheapest one, even if it is less convenient. (One company I worked at ran into money problems and found ridiculous out-of-the-way routes for some people, just to save a few hundred yen per person per month. They told me I had to take a route that made two long sides of a triangle instead of going along the one short side, because that train line was cheaper. I kept taking my regular route and paid the difference.)
Another company I worked at paid only for train or subway. They said if you choose to live far from a station in order to pay less rent, and had to take a bus to the station, they didn't care to pay it. City busses (in Tokyo) can be expensive/distance compared to trains, so this is something to check.
If you are going to a different location each day this could all be different.
If you cycle or get a scooter you should get the same money as above anyway. |

Personally, I hate the place second only to Kobe. But that's just my opinion. Ignore that part of anything I say because you're not me. I know people that like Nagoya. You might too. |
Nagoya's a big city---it's not as interesting, naturally, as Tokyo or Osaka, and doesn't have the precious atmosphere of Kyoto, but it isn't "lame." There's plenty to do there and the people are friendly enough. |

There are a lot of even 3rd rate cities where you'll have all that you need. Unless you need some super specific electronic, or weird cosplay thing, you don't need Tokyo/Osaka. Most cities have movie theaters, foreign groceries, costco, gyms, and what not. |
