Hi. I have been offered a teaching position at this school (IH Interpress Karaganda, Kazakhstan) which I'm considering. I understand Karaganda isn't exactly a great city itself however I'm looking for a feedback for this school. Its an International House school so I hoping its a good place to work. Appreciate feedback about the school and living in Karaganda itself. Thanks.

I've never worked for IH myself, but what I can gather from the numerous threads on this forum is that IH branches differ. Some can be very good, some quite awful, but the sharing of an umbrella organisation is not particularly relevant from the employee's point of view.

Don't blame me if I call this wrongly, but we usually get the horror stories if a place is bad - people don't normally bother to write in to say "it's ok" - so I would think that your chances are reasonably good. On balance.. Is there any chance of calling another native speaker there?

I don't know the Karaganda school but I know a few people (not on this forum) who work in IH Almaty and Astana.

I've never heard any major complaints other than having a busy workload and not getting paid very well (typical for all IH schools).

They seem to have a reasonably good academic support system.

It runs very much along the same lines as BKC-IH Moscow (some staff went from Moscow to set up IH KZ using the same model) so what you read about BKC would probably also apply ie good for a year to get set up and then go part-time / hourly paid while you look for better options. People seem to do pretty well for private work once on the ground.

I'm working for IH Almaty. It's fine, good accommo, DOS and ADOS and support system and absolutely no problems with pay or anything like that. I'd some teething troubles including an incident with the cops on my first day which you can read about on another thread but the school spat bricks and got that sorted.

Thanks everybody for the response. Despite signing the contract and buying my air tickets, I ended up not going - thanks to a cyclone!
