Living in this country is made slightly more tolerable by being able to focus on the next vacation. What are some destinations you've been to that others might want to try out? For me priority one is usually getting somewhere this isn't desert. Turkey has a variety of options. I haven't yet ventured to South-East Asia or India or anywhere, are there are nice places worth investigating?

Cyprus and Sri Lanka are two great island destinations that are not too far away and relatively cheap. The only sand you will find are on the coasts ...lovely beaches.

Just back from Nepal - awesome - and easy to get to: direct from Bahrain or route from Saudi through Doha or the Emirates.

Almost anywhere in Europe is a shortish flight, so take your pick of countries.

In the past few years, I have been to:

* Turkey (x2)
* North Cyprus (go to Ayios Philon, the best beach I have ever seen, with water clearer than my compound swimming pool's!)
* Cornwall
* Mauritius (x2)
* Dubai (x2)

Other nearby nice places that I hope to go to some day:

Oman
Yemen
Iran
Maldives
Srilanka
Kerala
Eastern Europe
Morocco
Sharm Alsheikh
Seychelles
Greece
Spain
Italy
Nepal
Bhutan
Malaysia
Scandinavia
Central Asian 'stans'

Or, Mecca for the cosmopolitan. Medina, less so.

In the bad oid days Asmara used to be a favourite. Revolution, civil war and independence changed that. Pity.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (and the surrounding highlands). This is especially appealing if you are on the west coast of the peninsula, as flights from Jeddah to Addis are very reasonable, and fairly short. It's such a refreshing change from Saudi as well, particularly if you are going during your Ramadan vacation: the Ethiopian highlands are lush and green, the Ethiopian rainy season is nice and long, so if you go during the summer you you get lots of cool, refreshing (but not too heavy) rain, coupled with a very pleasant temperature, it's extremely cheap, and there is lots to see and do. There are also lots of beautiful women too, which always enhances the aesthetic. Well recommended!

I would agree that Ethiopia is a wonderful place to visit if you're coming from the Gulf. It's refreshing to see so much more green and colour in general! There are lots of interesting things to see and do, it's really inexpensive, and the food, coffee, and local beer are all delicious (particularly in Harar!) You'll see many more smiling faces than you do in the Gulf, and to add to what the previous poster said, there are plenty of beautiful people of both genders there!
