Hi.

I used to be a regular poster on the Korean boards and was out there last year teaching at a University. Am now back in the UK working in a Corporate Investment Bank (Yippee!!). Anyways, my boyfriend is keen to return to Thailand, only this time to live, and I'd love to get back into teaching TEFL again, so.....

I have an Honours degree (Psychology) A grades in English at GCSE/A Level and am currently doing a TESOL course by distance learning. Plus teaching experience in the classroom both in the UK and in Korea.

What are my job prospects like?

Also, for a guy that has an HNd, but no degree or TESOL/TEFL cert are there any opportunities for teaching?

Otherwise I'll end up having to support him! Shocked

Many thanks!

Lot of great opportunities for you in Bangkok and upcountry, great opportunities for your boyfriend up country. If you are keen to come to Thailand, then come on over. You should try for 30k plus a month. Your boyfriend should push 25k a month, not bad of a lifestyle if you are only over here for a year or two.

can I give a warning though? Thailand is not the best place for couples, take it from me. Two people may come together in love, but it is tough on women. Foreign men tend to get a lot of attention from women, including their students. The opportunities to cheat are rampant. You may want to think about that before making a decision to come over here.

Push for 30K or 25K in Bangkok. Outside Bangkok you should not expect more than 20K from one job. Most people work 2 jobs so they can save money, which won't be much. Forget about trips home (unless your relatives pay for you) or traveling outside Thailand on those salaries.

sorry, working vaca, not sure where you are teaching now, but 25k has become the mininum outside of Bangkok. I would push for 30k in Bangkok. You are right about trips home though, pretty much impossible as is saving any money. I am teaching in a rural area and making 30k a month, but find it difficult to save every much money.

I must say, I went to Thailand a couple of years ago on holiday, and on 30,000 you could ahve a good time, but wouldn't be able to save much, I agree. But then I wouldn't go to Thailand expecting to save.

There ARE jobs in China where you can save money, although they're harder to get. I've only saved about 700 quid this year in China, although the school will give me enough to fly back to the UK at the end of the year (I'm saving it personally). But with a job paying 10,000 yuan a month I reckon you could save 5000 of that a month.

You go to Thailand more for the quality of life, food, cheap nightlife (way cheaper than China; here I will spend 35 quid on a night out, over in Thailand you can get a bottle of whiskey with four redbulls in the most touristy bar in Samui and it still only costs about a fiver), etc. IMO.

Thanks for the responses!

I have to say, I'm well aware that there are a lot of exceptionally beautiful Thai women and I know that they throw themselves at Western men, and that Western men fall for those dark liquid eyes and long shining tresses all the time. It was exactly the same for my male friends in Korea. Then again, I had all of my adult male students declaring their undying love to me! Very Happy I learnt to deal with the whole Western women Vs. Asian women jealousy thing as best I could when I was out in Korea. Not always easy though!

Maybe I'll just go on my own then!

Also, I would like to save, but if that isn't feasible then I'm quite happy just paying for day to day life. The best place to save (I feel) is Korea. I'd get 950 a month (tax free) and I could quite easily save half of that each month and still have a good time.

I'll pitch for around 30k then.

Cheers.
