Seems to me that a lot of us regular posters have been going a bit odd recently. Even the normally sensible Glenski has joined in the silly brigade with his talk about woo-woo trains... Sasha, well we know what years of exposure to Russian vodka has done to his brain...
So are we all having a funny moment?
It got me thinking. With the exception of Scot47 (who has no excuse having retired) what do you all do when teaching abroad gets too much?
Does Dave's ESL Cafe serve a higher purpose than just a meeting point to ask for and offer advice?
I have to say, although I don't teach as much as I used to, it's nice to know there's a forum which keeps my brain sharp, allows me to give a bit back, and gives me the chance to lark around a bit.
So what do you all do when it the teaching and living abroad thing gets a bit too much? |

I'm in Libya after years of living in Latin America, which is about as big a culture shock as you can get.
I guess lots of skype conversations and escapist novels have been my methods lately. |

For me, it's not being abroad that takes away my edge; it's when I'm back in North America that I start obviously slipping. |

Some people say "Lighten up, Glenski", and when I toss out a tidbit of humor someone else says I've gone over the edge. Can't please everyone, I guess. Should I ask my shrink to explain that, or is a cigar sometimes just a cigar? |

Nothing wrong with my brain! To even suggest it! Grrrr! How many others here have read Kapital?! Eh, eh?! How many here have read all the great Lenin's works?! Eh?
Nothing better than snuggling under my bed-covers with bottle to hand and a nice heavy tome to while away the long winters. |

I have a vague recollection of wading through Das Kapital and of also having to write an essay entitled something along the lines of: Alienation in the Labour Market.
It was a while before I recovered from that. I wish I kept that essay though. I'd like to know if I could now understand a single word of what I wrote. (I may be wondering this about my posts in the long distant future). |

And I thought itd been lost in the mists of time! Nah, I think it can just stay archived. Ill leave it to posterity. |

I too, have read "Kapital", but prefer "Anti-Duehring". In the original German, of course ! |
