Dear sheikh,
I must protest. We gringos don't speak bad - we speak badly.
(And, of course, it should be mentioned that Mexicans and Canadians are Los norteamericanos, too )

Yes, I know you speak badly. I was quoting my students. They say you speak bad. And they hate it when I refer to ¨Americans¨ as if citizens of the USA were the only inhabitants of the whole continent. |

| We are all Americans- Mexicans, Canadians, USA'ians(!?!). Hell, even Puertoriquenos. It is a real linguistic problem to deal with the Statesians. I say, take down the walls and the borders and the hate. |

It's surely time for some fresh peeves. Heaven knows there's an unending supply around!!
Here's a contribution from one of the rising stars of the US Republican party:
Jindal: GOP must compete for every vote, reject identity politics, be more smart
http://edition.cnn.com/2012/11/15/opinion/jindal-gop-election/index.html?hpt=hp_bn9
Not to mention 'baited breath' (is that the same as worm breath??)..... |

I know it’s an old one for Pet Peeves, but it comes up so often!
There
They’re
Their
How hard can it be to use them properly? It’s often carelessness and not bothering, but sometimes I think it’s a genuine literacy issue with native speakers.
I’ve seen the following a number of times: ‘Bare in mind....’ (empty-headed?) and ‘ment’ (for meant)
*Bare in mind that there baited breath wasn't ment to be seen by everyone!

| People who think "etcetera" is part of the spoken language rather than a convention in writing. |

Scot47... Tell me more about not using etcetera in speech. I didn't know that and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in my ignorance.
