I saw an ad on craigslist for preschool teachers. Says it includes 10 days of training in L.A. before going to China, salary in China about 1300 RMB, they provide most meals and accommodation, a shared two-bedroom apartment.
I'm in my fifties, single, and never taught before. I recently got a college degree, not happy with the lack of opportunities I'm finding here in the States so I'm thinking about teaching in China.
I don't know what it's going to be like dealing with tiny tikes all day. That's question number one. I've seen a few posts here from people that said they never wanted to teach kids that age again. Is it so bad that I would be tearing my hair out after a few months? I realize being able to deal with kids is a matter of personality, so kind of hard to answer, but still I think hearing from those with experience would be useful. I'd be doing this to get my foot in the door.
The other question is -- what are Zhengzhou and Shenyang like? |

Sorry, the salary is in dollars, not RMB! |

You should probably take a rural job which has a mix of students. Then you can decide which group you fit better with. If you are questioning a select group at your age, I doubt things will go smoothly.
What experience do you have?

I have only been to Shenyang, but from the map they look drastically different. Is there a reason why you are looking at these two as opposed to other cities? For me Shenyang was ok for 6 months, but not much there to do (and I was right there in the center of things). Dalian and Qingdao are better cities I understand.
From the pics Zhengzhou looks better, but I prefer the colder weather. Your choice if you want to live in a place where you can travel to Xian, Wuhan, Nanjing and Beijing, or if you want to live in the colder areas and go to places like Harbin, Changchun, and Dalian. |

I am going to go ahead and post a link to the ad:

Thanks for the responses. I've noticed in other threads that people can sound pretty emphatic about not sharing an apartment.
Maybe I should be patient and, like Goldilocks with the three bowls of porridge, look for the position that's just right.
But having no experience teaching, never having traveled in Asia, and not knowing what to expect of potential employers based on their ads (the forum abounds in horror stories) makes it hard.
Committing to a whole year is a little daunting, too. Are there positions that reimburse air fare with only a semester or six months commitment?
To some degree I'm just a warm body, having the minimum qualifications for teaching in China -- a college degree, but no training and no experience. |

interesting....that job offer does not list the number of teaching
hours. i assume 5 days per week, based on the 'free' food, so
they probably want a full 40 hours....or more.
with a salary of 8000, you would be making 50 rmb/hour. |

?? How is there nothing to do in Shenyang? The city has bars, museums, parks, shopping areas, a variety of restaurants, etc. What were you looking for, an opera? |

I'd bet that Shenyang even has that in one form or another.
