Hi,

I am thinking of applying for a job in Ningbo at the University of Nottingham.

I have lived in China before, in Suzhou and Shanghai, both of which I thought were fascinating and liveable, if at times dirty, cities.

How is Ningbo as a city? Is the air filthy? Are there many parks? Are there many nice places to get away to at the weekend (been to Hangzhou, Yiwu, Shanghai, Haining, Suzhou, Nanjing and the water towns before)? Are the islands off the shore of Ningbo worth visiting?

I would be coming with a wife and child. My child will be 3 years old. Is Ningbo a decent place to spend two years with a child (for the child - looking at space and places to run around)? Healthcare is an important concern.

Finally...what does 5,000RMB get you in terms of accomodation? Decent condo?

Cheers,

WI

Never been there. A search for "ningbo forum" might help.

It's nothing special.

There are some parks.

Air pollution is a feature, as it is almost everywhere in Chinese cities.

It has a "laowai, laowi, ha ha ha" element in the streets.

And the islands are okay, but not great.

I have several former students who live in Ningbo and they often tell me how nice it is and encourage me to visit, but I haven't been there yet.

I'd like to go and see what it's like, but it probably won't happen anytime in the near future. I have yet to meet a student who will say anthing bad about their "hometown" (other than a few who will say it's "boring" there).

Good Luck if you decide to go there and be sure to come back and post about how you like it.
