Next time I have a hankering for Istanbul, I will just head to this small town which is only about 20 miles away from my house -

OK, but you will never manage to recreate the full Istanbul experience.
Where in Scotland can you find people aggressively selling you rugs, or Turkish-quality drivers?

Loosely based on the Hagia Sophia? .. Are they bonkers?

Now if there were a central dome supported on two sides by semi-domes which were themselves each supported by 3 semi domes, they might be able to claim that it was loosely based on the Hagia Sophia ..

One of the most important archictectural features of the Hagia Sophia is it's dome and the engineering that went into it ... it was the first quadrangular building larger than a tomb to be built with a dome for a lid .. and it required the masterminding of a structure called a pendentive to accomplish this ..

Maybe I'm wrong ... maybe it was the Hagia Sophia's toilet that this scottish chapel based itself on ... In which case, it's a true Tehurdosean Scatillica ..

I would take the Scottish St Sophia every time over the architecture I see in the course of mundane working life out here ...

However .. I have just returned from a two week tour of some of the major architectural sites in central Italy .. including such gems as the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, the Duomo of Florence & Orvieto, and Santa Sabina in Rome ..

.. So my pangs of jealousy are not as acute as you'd like them to be .. Give them time ..

Given the choice, I too would live closer to the centre of the Imperium Romanum. Do you think the Legions will come back to Britannia ? Those uppity locals in Londinium need taking down a bit.

With any luck, the only legions seen in the city will be those of the tartan army coming to steal another piece of wembley turf ..

Given the current state of soccer north of the Solway that is VERY unlikely.
