OK...I'll preface this with the fact that I did read the advice on here about taking some time reading through past posts to look for answers before posting my question. I have spent time scouring the boards...even the two pages arguing whether it's "I could care less" or "I couldn't care less"... I side on the later by the way. In any case here is our situation. I have been an elementary school teacher for 30 years and am about to retire. My wife has been an educational assistant for the past 12 years and is currently in the middle of a year off taken to complete a teacher education program in university and will graduate as a licenced teacher this May. We are considering packing up and leaving our Toronto, Canada home and heading overseas for a couple years to ply our craft. Abu Dabi has come up on our radar as it seems to be one of the more lucrative options. I'm looking for any advice the many experts here may afford us. I know this is an extremely vague question, but I anticipate more specific questions arising from the responses given. I (we) would appreciate any guidance offered. |

You didn't state what content area you presently teach in Canada, nor what you both intend to teach in terms of overseas opportunities. Anyway, try teachaway.com for job info on the UAE/Mid East. |

Sorry. Over the past 30 years I've taught basically every subject to grades 4-8, save music and art, and phys ed to all grades from K - 8. I have specialist qualifications in Reading, Guidance, and Phys. Ed. Also qualifications in Special Education (Behaviour) and hold Principals Qualifications. Teach Away is one of the companies I've started to look in to. |

If you're looking into international schools, internationalschoolsreview.com has loads of info as well.
I've heard that Switzerland is good as well, and yes even if you aren't Swiss or EU passport holders, there are teachers on the forums at IRS that have gotten jobs there. |

So, based on the fact that my wife and I are looking at spending a year or two overseas with the opportunity towards putting aside $1000 or more a month after living expenses (including moderate entertainment costs) would you recommend UAE or Korea? Initially we were thinking Abu Dhabi having looked at the teach away site, but after reading some blog entries from teachers there, we have heard of some rather serious pitfalls if you get the wrong placement. (Specifically abhorrent behaviour issues) |

One of the Gulf countries is switching to a bilingual education plan beginning in primary is that what you were talking about? Their website gives a warning about behavior and the difficulties that foreign teachers have with it that I've never seen in my entire career which began as an assistant in 1986. That scared me off.
PM me and I'll tell you something privately. |

2 wage earners and only wanting/needing $1000/month in savings leaves just about all of Asia to pick from.
