There has been an increase in interest in Suzhou amongst current UNNC CELE staff. There had always been a feeling before that UNNC had the edge in terms of being a better place to work (as there may have been amongst the XJTLU staff that Suzhou was a better place to work) but that no longer seems to be the case. People are looking to move over, with management style being a major motivator.

The observations are for 2 hours (line managers observe for a full class) but that is to see how fully the lesson aims are met. If the observation was for half the lesson it might seem as if aims aren't met as the observer would miss the other half of the lesson where they were met. There is also now an hour long meeting pencilled in before an observation to talk through the lesson plan etc. And there is also a feedback meeting after the observation, so the whole process is closer to four hours than two.

If you fail the observation then you will be observed again. Teaching performance is part of the Annual Performance Review, and so a failed observation might mean failing to meet expectations. The immediate outcome of that would be not getting the annual salary increase that all staff get. There hasn't been a case yet of someone failing observations and their contract being terminated.

The issue about IELTS isn't really an income related one, certainly not for the majority of examiners. It's more the case that a skill we have, and a qualification that is valuable in our industry, is going to be lost. Of greater concern is that that deskilling, and the negative impact it will have on our future employability, isn't a concern to the organisation. The decision to ban IELTS is almost the exact opposite of professional development.

Sounds like the management there on a major power play and want to see how far they can push it. I never understand the need for this type of approach in our industry, you'd think these types would be involved in some other power hungry, competitive type of occupation. Or maybe, given the "academic" type of job you have, with the "academic" personality types that it attracts, might be increasingly promoting ambitious people with a serious lack of people and management skills.

It seems a shame, from all reports, Nottingham Ningbo sounded like a place to aspire to work at, but maybe not any more..

I have a British friend who's working there now. He's been there for a couple years. He's taught for a long, long time, has a DELTA, hard-worker, etc. He likes it, but he says it is a lot of work. That being said, you're paid very well. More than XJTLU.

Have seen the ad (on BALEAP) for EAP teachers at Ningbo and would like to know what's the net pay after tax/deductions? Isn't the rate of income tax at 40-45% for salaries of around 330k renminbi? What kind of accommodation allowance do you get? In short, what do you come out with at the end of the month?
thanks any info on this...
