Mali is slightly easier than Afghanistan, in that most people adhere to relatively liberal strains of Islam; the jihadists are mostly foreigners who were sheltered and supported by Tuareg separatists. Even if the separatists would be willing to make a deal with the same people who stabbed them in the back and grabbed control from them (and I wouldn't put it past them), if you can oust the Islamists and then bring the separatists to the table, the Islamists won't have it any easier than any other group of crazy people who tries to set up shop in the Sahara.

The book-loving peoples of the Motherland are the proud beneficiaries of many, many bookshops, dotted all over the capital. Books from all over the world are available for the betterment of the workers. Home-produced books fall of our production lines like sausages. This may surprise those from the decadent west. But no matter. We will bury you. Hic!

Anyway, Qaaolchoura, some books I have read recently about 'Aleksandr the Macadonian', as the Russians call him, are:
Alexander the Great, by Paul Cartledge
Alexander the Great: Death of a God, by Paul Doherty
Alexander the Great, by Norman Cantor
The Legendary Adventures of Alexander the Great, published by Penguin Epics
The first in the list is the most interesting, I thought. However, I cannot recall which of them detailed Alexander's naughty deeds in Afghanistan, or even if it was those books that did. Sadly, very little of the way of primary documentation, so a lot of speculation is to be found in any book about him. But, think about it - how else is a megalomaniac going to deal with unrepentant guerilla fighters? Wipe out a half dozen villages, then the next half dozen may think twice about getting restive.
On a lighter note, the BBC documentary by Michael Wood is hugely enjoyable. Enjoy!

| Never made that connection before. Interesting. Lots of places scattered around bear his name, or a corruption of it. Iskenderun in Turkey is an easy one to spot. |
