Is it essential that you enter China BEFORE the date of first entry on your invitation letter? What happens if you enter a day or two later?

The only date that matters is the one on the visa. The entry date will be the date of issue. You then have 90 days.

There was another post recently from someone who wished (I think) to come over and work at a summer camp before starting at a regular uni job in Sept.
Johnt's post would appear to provide a timescale in which that could happen.
