A few years back, whilst teaching in Shanghai, I suffered from a perforated artery caused by a stomach ulcer. 2 weeks in hospital and a really hefty bill made me pretty relieved that I had health insurance.

Now I'm heading to Moscow I am starting to think about the health aspects.
Being more susceptible to stomach issues I'd like to know what kind of medical care expats are entitled to.

Does Russia offer free state health care or should I be looking at getting myself some insurance? Any suggestions?

Get private health care - no question. Especially if you already know that you have a higher likelihood of needing it than most people.

Others here may disagree, but in my experience, you simply do not want to know about the public hospitals here. Can be primitive field hospital affairs. They are not even really free either, with the amount of corruption and basic theft that can occur.

Good luck.

I am currently paying my way in a private room in a public hospital. The others are living in the equivalent of a prison camp. I let em in to watch telly when the nurses aren't about. I'll probably get a really nasty set of injections when they catch me, which they will in the end; stool pigeons.

A few minutes after the last post, the nurse came in. "I saw you walking to the village." "Yes?" "I thought you were trying to escape." "No, I know the penalty for escaping."
