Hello,

I currently work as a Trainer, Assessor & Verifier in the UK and am involved in quite a few different disciplines, including ESOL & EFL.
Been teaching for near enough 9 years now mostly Adult Education, although possess approx 3 years experience teaching ESOL and EFL to 14-19 year olds.

Anyhow, I'm looking at options in the Middle East, preferably UAE, Qatar and Oman and wanted to get an idea if a PGCE (Further & Higher Ed), Trinity Cert TESOL and an unrelated BA (Hons) plus approx 4 years ESOL teaching experience in the UK only, would be sufficient for English Instructor related jobs?

Anyone also know how A1 Assessor Awards and Verifier Awards are viewed in the Middle East?

Don't know about the middle east but it will land you a job in Hong Kong (NET program) with a remuneration package of close to 40k quid/year.

If you are looking at the tertiary level just about anywhere (other than perhaps China and/or Korea) then you will probably need a related undergrad degree and/or a related Master's (MATESOL / MA Applied Linguistics, M.Ed, etc).

This thread belongs in the general Mid East forum, but I'll answer your questions here.

For starters, employers in the Gulf have a preference for university/tertiary-level teaching experience, especially if gained overseas---Gulf experience is very desirable. With your qualifications, it's most likely a no for Oman due to your unrelated degree; ditto for uni-level jobs in Qatar, which require a related MA. You might qualify for a teaching position in the Emirates---ADVETI comes mind, possibly HCT. Both have been discussed on the UAE forum. But be aware your competition will be those holding relevant MAs and several years of uni experience. Language schools do exist in the Gulf, but they tend to hire local expats, which means minimal pay and benefits.

Although you didn't mention Saudi Arabia, you'd probably qualify for an entry-level TEFL position in one of the country's many university foundation programs. Move over to the Saudi jobs forum if you have questions about teaching in the Kingdom.

If you're in the UK, consider attending IATEFL's conference and job fair next month. There are already numerous Mid East positions posted on via the jobs link. You'd have to review the requirements to see what your qualifications will get you. Hopefully, your TESL experience is rather recent; otherwise, it could be an issue.

I know nothing about A1 Assessor Awards and Verifier Awards in the region. To be honest, I'm not sure what that even entails. Try www.gulftalent.com/ and www.bayt.com/ for possible openings.

I think the British Council likes this type of qualification. How about checking out their website?

The A1 Trainer, Assessor and Verifier Awards are only for assessing learning for NVQs (as far as I know) which are not known or used overseas. I doubt they would be given much credence.

if you have the assessor awards as well as TEFL I rather think BC would be interested (yes, I agree, not non-British organisations). Because they have teacher training and assessment systems in place. These qualifications are not just for NVQs (I know, as I had to get them for assessing other qualifications not just NVQ).

Hello All,

Just wanted to thank you all for responding, got some great advice here and a starting point which I'm looking to pursue now.
The IATEFL's conference is happening near to where I live so I will be attending that and understand the British Council will also be present there so will have a good opportunity to have a chat with them about suitable vacancies and the Assessor and Verifier Awards.

I've also managed to find a training company in AD looking for the Verifier Award qual too, so will be applying to them...looks like these quals are recognised but only by a few specialist type of providers.

Cheers!
