Shared apartment is a big no no.

I came to China with KidCastle[didn't know it was them] saying I'd live in a single apartment, and they put me in a shared apartment.

Not too far from school, IF on site accommodation no fees or utilities please, and another thing, this year I will negotiate with the university for external internet, the universities internal internet to which I connect is dire.

Free food or whatever, no thanks, although it doesn't harm. At a school I worked out I got a card and the canteen food was free, but fairly dire.

Long commutes is a nono unless I'm paid for those hours, funny how they don't like it.

Teaching plans every week, no.

Choice of what I can teach is something I like too.

I really like jobs that let you get on with it, if you mess up the student's tell them, if not, you're on your own. I like to just see my boss to pick up the cash.

Beyond starting and if I had of known, I would not have accepted the contract. What became evident after starting was:

No hot water in my apartment. (Once a week if lucky).

No water at all, shutoff any time any day without warning.

Electricity blackouts any day any time without warning.

Cafetaria food that causes food poisoning.

Having to take a shower in a public bathhouse to stay clean.

CCTV 9 was not accessible.

Loud, blaring speakers every morning at 7am. (Drove me to anger).

What type of job was this? Was it an apartment at a uni, or an apartment you got on your own?

Too many expats? I would have to agree completely with this after my experience. I am in a great, southern city thats even relatively clean. However, there are far too many foreigners here for my liking. I have found that when this happens, they all tend to get attitudes about anyone who is not from THEIR country and are not very friendly. I was in a different city for two years before this, not clean, not very nice. However, I had great friends there from all over, Europe, Canada, and USA. I also had many more Chinese friends there. I would opt for the latter, if I had to choose between.

I also agree with no children under 14.

I'm probably a weirdo (wait, I'm teaching English in China, of course I am), but don't mind split two days off, I don't mind teaching kids (although I prefer middle school), and I don't mind a shared apartment (then again I have a pretty cool roommate).

My non-starters would be:
*big cities - more than 5 million people
*less than 8,000 RMB per month
*more than 25 classes a week
*only Oral English classes
*only one day off a week
*kindergarten (ugh!)
*required office hours
*no other expats in the area

I'll likely stick around my current school for another semester/year, but every time I get near the end of my contract I always shoot out some resumes, respond to some ads to see what else is out there.

Inevitably I get hundreds of replies, most of which are shite, but it's annoying sifting through the thorns to get to that one rose, ya know?

So I end up looking for keywords that see the email get moved straight to the delete folder.

Personally any job that says "Kindergarten", "One day off a week", "+15 office hours", Less than 5,000rmb are all non-starters regardless of the other conditions.

I understand everyone has different priorities. For many a 5,500rmb salary is on par with beggar's pay, for others that tranquil, relaxed gig in scenic Yangshuo represents insanity inducing boredom in Bumpkinville. One man's split shift is another's much needed afternoon nap etc.

Just curious what are the keywords or crappy conditions that see job offers being deleted by you guys?

Based on the past year's worsening air quality hideousness I've now added "Beijing" to the not-to-be-considered potential job list. Shame as I've always enjoyed visiting the place, but just can't envision permanently moving further into that particular Ground Zero.

Office hours can be a killer, if you do 8 office hours a week, you're losing AT LEAST potentially 8*150 = 1200 a week in wages you could make elsewhere.

So you'd be better asking for no office hours and a little less salary

Yay! Happy English! Come on everybody! Let's get happy! Very Happy Laughing Confused

1. "Come on an L-visa and we'll convert it later for you." Uh, why can't you just get me the Z-visa upfront and from the get-go?

2. "Shared apartment." Never. Are you kidding me? I'm too old for that.

3. Wages are also key. If it is the bog-standard 5,000/mo. uni gig then I want to be in a position where I can at least pick up a fair bit of other work on the side to at least triple that income.

Those are the three big ones for me. Plenty of smaller ones as well.

Indeed, good post. Glad to see it resurrected.

Warm regards,

"Shared apartment" isn't going to happen either. Not on this planet.

I can't even spend more than 4 or 5 hours with my nearest and dearest friends whom I've known since I started walking without wanting to carve them up with one of those free knives from Auchan....let alone some unknown stinky, drunk hippy with dreadlocks from Saskatoon peeing all over the toilet seat, spending their days listening to f@cking Morrissey and ogling the elementary school students. Blergh.

This cracked me up, but indeed…so true. Definitely this.

So much posted here already make for great warning signs.

But if I took it all, or even most of it, into consideration, might not have landed on my feet where I did in a job I really do enjoy. Very hard to judge anything based on electricity bills or city size when it comes to job satisfaction.

Would say, with caution, that a lack of willingness to negotiate and/or send an incompetent person to the table/phone/net to lure you in. But again, in my case those doing the recruitment are far removed from those in charge of the academic side of things. So either way, you could be in for a unexpectedly bad/good time.

If the warning signs start to add up, pay heed. Would state that the obvious one is getting real paperwork, and is something I really do encourage. But came over (last minute, weeks into the semester) on a business visa way back when and had to do the HK run, which worked out. So even demanding that on such a thread seems disingenuous.
