Seems on the up and up but I thought I would run the name past the wise and learned multitudes on this site. The program is Global Teaching Fellows and it runs through Willemette University in Organ. Has anyone had dealings or heard about this group? Any information would be helpful as I am close to maybe making a big life decision. Thanks teachers!

It sounds like an interesting program. Willemette Unversity is variously accredited which is very good indeed.

Their Global Fellowship will likely direct you into a specific kind of work in Japan, and that is noteworthy. If you are going to be teaching English language courses through their affiliate university in Japan, they will probably be ESL.

At the end of the fellowship, you will then be able to say that you have had 2-3 years of university teaching experience. That said, in Japan you will still most likely need 2-3 academic publications or a pretty strong connection to keep getting university work after you finish and likely only on 2-3 year contracts.

I don't know how highly regarded your university teaching in Japan would be considered compared to the same experience in the US. Tough to say and worth asking them about.

What this program will not do is give you certification to teach at a public school back in the states or anywhere. This is a disadvantage because you may want to return at some point and most of the better paying and most abundantly available ESL jobs in the US are in public schools.

Another disadvantage of this program is that you are starting out in a private school. I can guarantee you that your fellowship will only cover a certain percentage of your school fees. If on the other hand, you pursued a big city teaching fellowship such as the New York City Teaching Fellowship, or Teach for America, most of you schooling would be paid for and you would be working full time for about 3 years and get a teaching license and very soon (within a year or two) have all your university expenses paid off.

If you are already finished or are finishing this MAT program, then disregard my conversation here about the cost of the program. The fellowship in this case is simply an attractive job opportunity for you...
