I'm living in Thailand and looking for teaching posts in HK. I have a BA degree and will finish my TEFL in 4 weeks. Therefore, I have only 6 hours teaching experience to my name and am very naieve about the availability of jobs in Hong Kong and indeed of the teaching environment. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about accomodation, which seems to be a big headache looking at some of the comments on this site. Listed below are the areas I need some enlightenment on:

1. How difficult will it be to get a job in HK with such minimal experience and what kind of salary can I expect?
2. What's PNET?
3. What type of schools exist in HK eg Local, Private, International?
4. Are there specific recruitment agents for teachers in HK?
5. Is there a particular time of year that a round of interviews are conducted? (I've seen references made that suggest this may be the case.)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Henrietta

Companies intialy to look at for part time work are English for Asia, Eureka and oops can't remember the name. I will try and remember later! THere are many private companies here that offer language school one to one positions but they can pay very little and with unreliable work. In fact that goes for most companies as far as the unreliable work is concerned. THe net scheme is Native English Speaker scheme which is government funded and places teachers in secondary and primary schools . But I don't think you have enough experience for that. You must also be aware that some of the major companies in the field will only recognise CELTA or Trinity Tesol. You must doubly be aware of the fact that the English teaching industry here is is turmoil because of SARS Summer school courses can offer a lot of work between July and the end of August.

However, if you are in HK it is quite easy to find work if you are persistent

Actually, I think it is a little difficult to find work right now.

As for companies that send teachers inot schools there are about 30 or so.

However the quality of thier programmes and teachers varies considerably.
