PR China requires a thorough medical. This can be performed in your home country using forms from your Chinese embassy/consulate,but you may find you are told to take it again on arrival. Its held at specialist "foreigner" clinics and is expensive! [about US $70 in Shanghai] It seems mainly aimed at blood borne diseases [Hep,HIV] and TB-things you can GET easily here if careless, but generally people don't BRING them in.Widely regarded as a fundraiser,it should be paid for by your school,I've never known anyone to "fail",and if you do,you can stay if you agree to treatment[don't know about HIV though] |

Your question covers a lot of ground....like Asia. Some schools in some countries(most private schools in Korea and Taiwan, for example) require NO health exam, period).Other schools(universities in some countries, for example)may require a physical.Your question is way too broad to elicit any meaningful answers. You will need to narrow it down to specific countries...and kinds of schools....at the very least. |

I agree with bnix. The question is too broad.
Nonetheless, here is my experience in Japan. My language school did not ask for a health exam before I left the USA. In the 3 and 1/2 years I worked for them, they never asked for any medical exam. At the high school where I work, having a medical checkup was a prerequisite for the job, and during the year, they also required a checkup of all teachers. The checkup was simple: height, weight, standard blood test, urine test, eye checkup, stool test for people over 45. |

This is not the right forum to create illusons, mate! Of course, if you "fail" the HIV-test then the PSB will NOT approve your application for a work visa.
Whether they boot you out of the country or not (this I suppose they will do but I have no concrete proof of this having happened), it means you cannot work legally here.
As a matter of fact, I befriended a HIV-positive teacher. When after long last the local PSB wanted to know if he had a medical certificate his school had to hurry him to a clinic.
The way the teacher took the poisitive result from the HIV test suggested he had known about his status.
The school then disassociated themselves from him, paid him the airfare one way and he was made to go. He left unescorted, or so it appeared (which I would consider highly unprofessional for the CHinese PSB, but then again they don't punish people who carry fake money either!).
The next thing I heard about him was he was teaching in Thailand. |

I stand by my comments on health checks in China-if Roger reads my post more carefully he'll see what I said about HIV.It's also useful to add that if a prospective employer at any kind of school tells you that a medical isn't required, they are lying, and cannot arrange a work [Z] visa for you, which means you'll be illegal,at their mercy, and liable for all kinds of hassles when you want to leave. The only exception to this MAY be some of the summer language schools that employ you on a tourist visa for a few weeks-however,check this out very carefully. As China must make up a good 80% of the Asian EFL market, this is important to know. |

Asia ? I think you have to be more specific. I am sure there are huge differences between different countries. Which one are you thinking of ? |
