I want to take a CELTA course and then move to teach in Medellin, so here are my 2 options:
1. SOL Schools International in Miami from Jan 7-Feb 1.
2. International House Bogota in Bogota from Jan 20-Feb 14.
My question is, does the Bogota course run too late into the hiring season? Should I do the course in Miami just to be safe? It's more expensive, but getting a job is more important in the long run.
Thanks in advance! |

All depends on where you want to work. My opinion is both run too late if you want to work anywhere running on an academic calendar. Institutes hire year-round, so you've got no problem there. My advice is do it wherever you want, but come to Bogota expecting you'll work a crappy institute job for a bit while you look for other options to start sometime around June-August. |

Thanks. I guess I don't really have a choice, then.
Are the institute jobs really that bad? I read that you're generally paid cash-in-hand, and the classes are small, relatively stress-free, and made up of motivated adult students. It also said they're in the evenings and on Saturdays. Is all of this true? How do they compare to teaching in colegios?
Thanks for your help. |

If you're young and doing it for a short period of time, then no.

Depends if you're legal or not.

Generally speaking, yes.

They can be on Saturdays, but not necessarily. Difficult to compare to colegios...depends greatly on the institute and the colegio. Generally, at an institute you're getting paid less money and benefits for less work, less stress, and worse hours. At an institute you'll get a lot less vacation. |
